After oral administration of bacterial lysates (OBL), bacterial antigens are taken up by microfold (M) cells and then processed by dendritic cells (DC) in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue. DC stimulate the local immune response in the Peyer’s patches with subsequent migration of immune effector cells to the bronchial-associated lymphoid tissue of the lungs.
